Detoxification

Sauna is the deepest cleansing bath in the world. Perspiration induced by a Sauna opens the body’s pores and naturally expels impurities and toxins. There are many detoxification programs that use the Sauna daily to rid the body of chemicals. The Sauna has been used to sweat out nicotine, pesticides and other toxins. The military uses Saunas to help with chemical detoxification. Skin is the largest organ of the body and 30% of body wastes exit through the skin. The Sauna elevates the body’s ability to rid itself of this waste.

Relaxation

Under high heat, the body releases endorphins—the body’s naturally produced pain relieving chemical. Endorphins can have a mild yet enjoyable tranquilizing effect. They also quell the pain from arthritis and muscle soreness after an intense physical workout.

Weight Loss

The Sauna should not, of course, be used as a weight loss aid by itself. When used with a good diet and exercise program, a Sauna can help burn more calories. Weight is lost in a Sauna, but most of it is water loss from sweating.

Pain Relief

Body temperature rises due to the heat of the Sauna, causing blood vessels to dilate and circulation to increase. The increased blood flow accelerates the body’s natural healing process-soothing aches and pains and speeding up of the healing of cuts and bruises. Following sporting activity, use the heat and steam of a sauna for muscle relaxation, reducing muscle tension and eliminating lactic acid and other toxins.

Blood Pressure

In the heat of a Sauna, skin heats up and core body temperature rises. In response to the heat, the blood vessels near the skin dilate and cardiac output increases. Medical research shows the heart rate can rise from a normal rate and can often go below normal after the cooling off stage. With regular sauna use, we not only train our heart muscles and improve the heart rate/cardiac output, we also positively influence the regulatory system.

Further cardiovascular conditioning occurs when the sauna is taken in multiple “innings,” with sessions in the sauna separated by a cool shower or a dip into a cool pool or lake. Every time you rapidly change temperature (from hot to cool or vice versa), your heart rate increases by as much as 60%–comparable to moderate exercise.

Skin Purification

Increased blood flow promotes cellular growth and development by bringing important nutrients to subcutaneous and surface tissue. While taking a Sauna, blood flow to the skin increases to as high as 50-70% of cardiac output (normal is 5-10%). Sauna heat relaxes facial tension, skin pores are opened and heat stimulates the epidermis, thus increasing circulation. Vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels) brings essential fluids to the surface, enhancing collagen production to maintain skin elasticity and a wrinkle-free complexion.

Healing

Body temperature rises from the heat of the Sauna causing blood vessels to dilate and circulation to increase. The increased blood flow accelerates the body’s natural healing process—soothing aches and pains and speeding up of the healing of cuts and bruises.

Tension & Stress

A Sauna not only feels good, it’s good for you. Whether it’s the physiological changes that occur in the warmth of a sauna, or if it’s simply the time spent in the calm, still retreat of the Sauna all who Sauna agree—it feels wonderful! As we go through our daily stressful lives, the Sauna provides a pampering retreat where we can relax and restore body and soul. A sauna truly makes you “feel better,” “look better” and “sleep better.”
